AI Voice Agent

An AI voice agent is software that holds a real-time spoken conversation with a customer over the phone or any voice channel: listening, understanding intent, responding in natural language, and taking actions like booking a slot or warm-transferring to a human.

Three things to remember

  • A voice agent runs an end-to-end conversation: it listens (STT), thinks (LLM + business logic), and responds (TTS), all in real time over PSTN, SIP, WebRTC, or WhatsApp Voice.
  • The hard parts are latency (≤ 1.5 sec mouth-to-ear to feel natural), turn-taking, barge-in, and graceful handoff to a human when the agent reaches its limit.
  • EnableX builds production voice agents that include the telephony layer, multilingual support (including 13 Indian languages), on-premise deployment for BFSI/government, and bot-to-human handoff to chat, voice, or video.

The detailed explanation

An AI voice agent is the production-ready successor to the press-1 IVR. Where IVR forces a customer through a menu, a voice agent lets the customer speak naturally (“I want to know my account balance”), understands the intent, fetches data, and replies in a humanlike voice.

Architecturally, a voice agent has five layers: a telephony layer (PSTN, SIP, WebRTC, WhatsApp Voice) that carries the audio; a speech-to-text layer that transcribes the customer; an orchestration / LLM layer that decides what to do (with business logic, function-calling, and CRM lookups); a text-to-speech layer that voices the response; and a conversation control layer that handles turn-taking, barge-in, and silence detection.

The two things that make an AI voice agent feel real or fake: end-to-end latency (target ≤ 1.5 sec mouth-to-ear) and turn-taking quality (the agent should know when the customer is done speaking, and should let the customer interrupt). Get those wrong and the agent feels mechanical no matter how good the TTS voice.

How EnableX implements AI Voice Agent

EnableX Voice AI is a production voice agent platform with telephony built in. Direct carrier interconnects in India (Jio, Airtel, VI, BSNL), Middle East (Etisalat, du, STC, Mobily, Zain) and SEA (Telkomsel, Singtel, Maxis, Globe); 13 Indian languages plus Arabic, Bahasa, Tagalog and 80+ others; bring-your-own LLM (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, open-source) via WebSocket media streaming or Pipecat; on-premise deployment for BFSI / insurance / government; and bot-to-human handoff to chat, voice, or video, not just a phone transfer. Latency target: ≤ 1.5 sec mouth-to-ear in the EnableX cloud.

FAQ — AI Voice Agent

A chatbot handles text conversations on web, WhatsApp, or RCS. An AI voice agent handles spoken conversations over the phone or any voice channel. The same underlying LLM and business logic can power both, but the voice agent adds STT, TTS, telephony, turn-taking, and barge-in handling.

Mouth-to-ear latency under 1.5 seconds feels natural. Above 2.5 seconds the conversation starts to feel mechanical. EnableX architects voice agents to a ≤ 1.5 sec latency budget across STT + LLM + TTS + telephony round-trip.

Yes, and it should. EnableX voice agents warm-transfer to a human on chat, voice, or video, with the full conversation context, sentiment, and intent already loaded in the agent's console. This is the difference between an AI voice agent and just a transfer to a queue.
