What happens if recipients don't have RCS enabled on their phones?

RCS messages can only be sent if both the sender and recipient have RCS enabled and are connected to the internet. If there's no internet connection, or if either party doesn't have RCS enabled, the message will automatically be sent as an SMS or MMS.

RCS is available on Android devices, and Apple announced on Sept 16th 2024 that RCS is supported in iOS 18. The most common way to access RCS messages is through the Google Messages app. To check if your phone supports RCS, open Google Messages, go to the menu in the top right, select Settings, and then choose Chat Features.
